If you are considering getting a bachelor degree online, but aren’t certain what field to go into, you might consider one of many business administration careers. And if you are a working adult who is looking for a career change but is concerned about leaving everything in order to return to school, you’ll be glad to know that there are many accredited online colleges that offer business administration degrees online.

Business administration careers keep the businesses of America operating smoothly. Careers in Business and finance is what Americans – at least those fortunate and smart enough to know that the way to wealth is not through work, but though buying, selling and moving financial instruments – do best. The future of the world belongs to those who know the rules of acquisition and how to apply them to their own advantage. Online business administration degrees will help you find the career path to the top of what is by nature a rigidly hierarchical system.

Most of us would agree that it is better to be in the higher levels of a hierarchical system than toward the bottom. A business administration degree is also quite flexible, and can take you any number of places – something that is quite useful in a dog-eat-dog system in which one’s head may be on the chopping block for any reason at any time without warning (metaphorically speaking, of course).

Although it is not nearly as glamorous as many other business careers, the accountant is indispensable to any well-run business; career and job opportunities are plentiful. A good accountant will never lack for employment. Accountants are also frequently self-employed free-lancers as well.

Banking and brokering are very hot careers in the new global economy. As you are probably aware, since 1980 the U.S. has moved its economic base away from manufacturing and real services (now well covered by our good friends in China and India) and toward a financial services base. Investment bankers, commodity brokers and stockbrokers are all positions that provide and control the flow and movement of assets in these areas.

As a human resource manager, you’ll be among those that decides who gets the job and who doesn’t. While there are many responsibilities for the HR person, the power associated with this career makes it quite worth the extra effort.

These are only a few of the many careers open to one who holds a business administration degree. Jobs for such people abound in the public as well as the private sector. The former offers greater security as well as opportunities to serve the public good. However, the latter is where the money is; it is no coincidence that many who leave government employment go on to highly lucrative careers in the private sector, especially lobbying. Who knows? With the skills you gain working toward a business administration degree online, you may even wind up writing important legislation from a corporate office on K Street!

Before getting started you should know that earning a master degree is not that easy as you may think. We’re talking about a higher level of education that’s much harder than earning an undergraduate degree.

The courses are focused on more precise subjects and in order to pass the tests you’ll have to study very hard and to prove your commitment.

All over the Internet you can find online Master’s Degree School programs. This means that you can complete the educational program without quitting your full time job.

The entire Master’s Degree program will last for a few months but the curriculum are very well structured. Before deciding to enrol in any online program you should take into consideration the next 4 master’s degrees:

– Master’s Education – if you’re a teacher and you want to advance your skills and start making more money then this degree is the right one for you. Most probably you will need it if you’re planning to become an administrator of an educational unit.

- Master’s in e-Commerce – this is a brand new degree chosen by many students that want to succeed in the virtual business world. This degree will help you find a job in a company or organization that needs or already has online activities.

- Master of Business Administration (MBA) – this is the perfect degree for any busy businessman that wants a higher status in its line of work. During the courses the students will learn everything about making the right business decisions when it comes to management, marketing and finance.

Even if most programs will ask you the prove of completing prerequisite coursework in business, other schools will help you earn your degree in only two years or even less.

- Master’s in Information Technology – this is the perfect specialization for people having a degree in math, computer science or other related field. The courses will teach you about software, data systems, project management, systems engineering, etc. If you have a professional background in the information technology you can qualify for an accelerated program.

It is very important for you to verify program and the school before enrolling. Also, you might want to check out a few prices and compare them in order to find the best offer for an online master degree program.

Write all the masters degree online programs on a piece of paper and compare their offers and prices. Check out their curriculum because for a few dollars more you can get a better or a worse package. Also you should take into consideration your career goals and the expectations of your future employers when it comes to master’s programs.

Your previous degree plays an important role in this game because you will have to see if your future master degree online program will recognize it.

In addition to all that you must check if the online university that you’ve chosen is accredited. Many of them are not eligible and following their courses would be like throwing your money on the window.

First, it is important to note that many schools offer graduate certificates (sometimes called “non-credit”) which are less extensive than masters degrees, but offer some focused expertise in a certain area. With the exception perhaps of art history, most of the degrees listed below can be obtained as a graduate certificate or a masters degree. Certificate programs are ideal for the arts professional who doesn’t have the time to commit to a full masters degree. New York University, for instance, offers a non-credit professional certificate in arts administration that is separate from the NYU Masters in Visual Arts Administration.

It is also worth mentioning that some programs offer different types of masters degrees: for instance, Boston University awards an M.S. in arts administration–not an M.A. And not to confuse my readers, but some programs call their graduate degree an M.F.A. even thought it’s not a studio art program. These distinctions may be superficial, but worth paying attention to.

Art History: The masters in art history is a very useful and flexible degree to have for the arts. Coursework for degrees in art history tend to solely focus on academic subjects, comprising a fairly well-rounded curriculum of world art–that is, there will likely be few to no “real world” courses, such as art law, or financial management, or other like-minded classes. That is not to say that art history classes are impractical: if you’re interested in being an art specialist of any kind–a curator, or auction house appraiser, for instance–you will need a sound and solid foundation of the stylistic history of art in order to make creative judgments, or set a price on an object. This degree is highly recommended for anyone considering a fine arts curatorial career. And remember, there are also even more specialized graduate degrees in art history, such as degrees in film studies.

Arts Administration/Management: Arts administration degrees focus, as one might guess, on the administration and managerial side of the arts. These types of degrees offer flexibility in that you can apply the skills you learn to management of fine arts, performing arts, music, and other public and private art sectors. Coursework for degrees in arts administration vary from program to program, but you will usually find a heavy emphasis on “practical” real world classes related to administration, finance, and business aspects of the arts, whereas elective courses may give you an opportunity to take an art history or studio course to supplement your degree. With these credentials, you will be well-qualified especially for development, grant-writing, and other administrative departments. Requirements and curricula do vary from program to program, so I encourage you to do the research necessary to find the one that suits your needs. The arts administration degree is an option for anyone who has an eye for museum directorship, someday.

Museum Studies: This kind of degree is similar to the arts administration degree, but of course, it is more specifically tailored for the student seeking a profession in museums, and less so in galleries, auction houses or other institutions. A museum studies degree offers some flexibility in the type of museum you can work in: anthropology and natural history museums, science museums, children’s museums as well as fine arts museums. With a museum studies degree, you may also find yourself able to work in various museum departments, such as a Registrar’s office, or in Museum Programming. Depending on the curricula of the program, you may acquire credentials that open up the door for more curatorial or exhibition design opportunities for non-fine arts museums, but again, if you’re looking to be a fine arts curator, the masters in art history is the way to go.

Curatorial Studies: As the name states, this type of degree focuses on the history and practice of curatorial work. Along with museum studies, this degree will offer flexibility in that you can curate or design exhibitions for various types of museum institutions. In curatorial studies programs, you may find the curricula to have more of a balance of academically oriented courses (in art history, theory, criticism, etc) and the practical courses on curatorial practice than you would with a masters in arts administration. For instance, the rigorous curatorial studies program at Bard College, which is well-regarded, is a good example of a program that balances the academic and professional applications of art. The Institute of Fine Arts, the doctoral program of NYU, interestingly has a Ph.D. program in curatorial studies, which is unusual. I must emphasize again, however, that for someone interested working in a fine arts institution, art historical or stylistic specialization will be more valuable, and thus the art history degree is recommended.

Art Education: If you know you’re interested in teaching the arts, a masters degree in art education could be a smart career move. This degree can land you a job as a museum educator: sometimes we forget that museums are educational institutions, and working in the education department of a museum can be extremely fun and rewarding. You can also teach art in schools or community centers. Although it is more geared for an artist, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, in conjunction with Tufts University, offers an M.A.T.–Masters of Art in Teaching in Arts Education.

Art Business: For someone who views the art market as just that–a market–a masters in art business will give you the business acumen you need to compete in the international business of buying and selling art. These degrees are fairly new, founded on a new sensitivity to the globalization and commercialization of art, although I do believe a the more versatile M.A. in arts administration opens the same doors as an M.A. in art business. A degree in art business prepares someone well for a career in the commercial sector of art–i.e. an auction house or gallery. It is no surprise, then, that Sotheby’s Institute of Art offers a masters in art business. Sotheby’s, and Christie’s as well, does offer some specialized graduate degrees (in contemporary art, design or arts of china, to name a few examples), and as might be expected, the programs are very object-oriented and geared for professional development. Ergo a degree from Christie’s or Sotheby’s of course can set someone up very well for a career in their own institutions, although their websites do boast to have alumni in museums and galleries too.

Art Therapy: Interested in the psychology of art? It is an undisputed fact that creating art and interpreting art are both powerful methods of self-expression and recovery. With a combined focus on the visual arts (and sometimes music) and psychotherapy, programs in art therapy that can train you to help people use art to express themselves, or to use it as a tool for recovery from medical procedures or trauma. Patients can range from children, to the mentally-disabed, to the elderly in senior care centers or assisted living homes.

Combined degrees: It is becoming more popular for top art administrators to get joint degrees–M.A.s and M.B.A.s–so they can be truly well-rounded leaders of cultural and non-profit institutions. The University of Cincinnati and Southern Methodist University, for instance, both offer an M.A./M.B.A. in Arts Administration. For someone interested in being a deputy director or director of an arts institution, this may be the type of degree you want.

There are scores of graduate degrees one can pursue in the arts–these, I would say, are probably the most common and popular. But you can also get a Masters in “Modern Art, Connoisseurship and the History of the Art Market” from Christie’s. My point is that there are other specialized degrees out there, so do the research you need to in order to find the program that best fits your career interests. Good luck!

Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN Registered Nurse, RN Registered Psychiatric Nurse, RPN

In Canada all nursing professions are regulated in the public interest and you must pass a licensing exam to become registered in order to practice nursing as a career.

Nursing education for each of these types of nursing has common curricular components and some specialty components. However, the length of nursing education varies and each category has a defined scope of practice.

Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practical Nurse has 1-2 years of education in a community college or private post-secondary training institute. They have a limited nursing scope of practice that is completely contained within the scope of practice of a registered nurse and cannot work with clients who are complex or require multiple interventions.

In Ontario and some other provinces they are called a Registered Practical Nurse and this is abbreviated as RPN. This can be confusing because a registered psychiatric nurse is also abbreviated as RPN in the western provinces. In many provinces LPN’s were not fully utilized for many years and the numbers of nurses practicing as a licensed practical nurse declined dramatically. Because of the pressures exerted by fiscal restraint and by the nursing shortage which is quite acute, the licensed practical nurse is now in demand again in provinces where they can legally practice.

Registered Psychiatric Nursing

Schools that prepare nurses to enter psychiatric nursing are limited to the four western provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. There are over 5,000 Registered Psychiatric Nurses registered with the 4 regulatory authorities in these provinces.

Registered Psychiatric Nursing is not recognized as a separate type of nursing in the eastern provinces so that might be why they call practical nurses RPN’s (Registered Practical Nurses). This term cannot be used in the western provinces because it already used for psychiatric nurses.

The association of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada recommends that the minimum requirement for initial registrants for entry to practice into the profession of psychiatric nursing should be a baccalaureate degree by the year 2012.

On the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Canada website there are 7 education programs listed for psychiatric nursing in all of Canada. There is no legally recognized classification of Psychiatric Technician in Canada. You may see this as a one of the different types of nursing in other countries such as the United States but it is not a recognized type of nursing in Canada.

Registered Nursing

Of the three types of nursing, registered nursing (the RN) is the most common type. It is typically the registered nurse that people think of when they think of the nursing profession. Registered nursing has the broadest nursing scope of practice.

There are no hospital based schools of nursing in Canada. A university education is required. Some colleges have partnered with universities and students can enter a nursing program where the first two years are offered in the college setting and then complete the nursing degree at the university.

Most provinces have registered nurse education programs that are 4 years in length ( 8-9 semesters) but some provinces are now implementing a three year program (9 semesters) as an accelerated program in order to bring more nurses into the Canadian health care system more quickly.

One province in Canada (British Columbia) is responding to increased pressures on the Canadian health care system by broadening the scope of practice of the registered nurse to include some tasks that were previously out of scope.

When these new regulations are put in place, under certain circumstances the registered nurse will be able to provide a broader range of services than that provided by the current regulations including:

ordering ultrasound or X-ray diagnostics (in triage situations) conducting tuberculosis screening managing labor in hospital when the primary care provider is absent

These changes recognize the current education and skills of the registered nurse. However, the changes are specific to British Columbia as the nursing profession in Canada is regulated provincially. It is quite possible and quite likely however, that other provinces will follow suit.
