How important is it to earn an MBA from a good graduate program ?

I currently attend a large state university which is a decent undergrad university. Their graduate program, however; is less than stellar and I’ve also heard that you are not supposed to do your MBA at the same school you did undergrad. So my question is, is it really that important that if you are going to get an MBA that it comes from a noted institution? (especially if you are eventually looking for an upper management career)
What do you really want to do? Get a job or get an MBA?
If you are lucky, and can find a job with a good employer, they may pay for you to get your MBA. So it will cost you little or nothing.
I think most people, when asked if they prefer a Brand Name MBA or somebody who can DO something, they will take the person who gets results. Of course, the two together would be very powerful.

Reputation does make a difference in the business world, especially if you want to work for a Fortune 500 company. Top programs give you access to a lot more internship (and, by extension, employment) opportunities and a more prestigious alumni network. And it’s true that you do want to try and get exposure to other professors, especially since the graduate-level classes will cover some of the material you’ve already had.
Ideally, though, you shouldn’t be applying for an MBA straight out of undergrad anyway. Get out into the working world, get some experience, and then decide what school fits best with the career track you want to take.
It is important to get your MBA from a decent graduate school. If you are going to spend your money on an education why waste it on a less than par program. I don’t think it makes a difference if you get your masters from the same school you got your undergrad at. I just encountered the same type of decision and decided to go somewhere else for my mba degree. It turned out to be a good choice. Good luck with everything!
