Do employers in the IT field look down upon online bachelors degrees?

I’m currently taking online courses at a regionally accredited online school for my BS in Information Security. Do IT employers look down upon online degrees when compared to a traditional degree? I will also have additional certificates, network +, security+, cisco….Will an employer just throw my resume in the trash, and employ someone with a traditional degree?

You need to have some type of experience to complement your online degree. It is a very competitive job market and there are many factors which influence the hiring decisions. It is helpful to get involved in professional organizations with your peers, network with potential employers as well as achieving certifications. A paper degree will not necessarily hand you a job on a silver platter.

If your resume is professional and sells your skills, background and experience, it will not be thrown in the trash. Make sure you spend enough time to develop a resume that is honest, accurate and factual.

IT personnel look down on anyone who claims to be proficient in IT work and only having a degree or only certifications.
    Why?

    1. A degree means squat
    2. Certs mean squat
    3. Experience is king

In summary, you need EXPERIENCE, a degree ( it gets you the interview with HR), and finally certifications help and will help with bonuses and raises.

So, if that didn’t answer your questions this will…

Online degree doesn’t matter just get experience to go with it.

P.s. Certifications are fun, so I would get some!

Most employers honestly won’t know the difference as they’re probably not going to ask you in an interview whether your degree is online or not. Having A degree is important, whether you got it online or off, but what you need to do, like mentioned by others who answered, is make sure you have the experience and skills to back up whatever degree you have.

Whatever job you might look for, an online degree won’t slow you down even if someone DOES ask.
