Computer Science Degree and No Job

After four long years in college, you have earned a degree in a field which you know is hot, can provide a healthy income, and yet here you find yourself without a job. Through various interviews employers have been impressed with your education, but they want skills, and experience. You are up against competition with years of experience and an education. This is where the job hunt can be frustrating.

Entrepreneurs inspiring to start their own business have a large decision to make, what to sell? We learn in college that finding the right niche is the answer. We learn that we have to find something that everyone needs, but cant be found everywhere; which leads me to my point; in the IT industry it is important to find your niche. With your four year degree in hand, you have obtained many different skills which employers like, but learning to specialize will set you apart from your competition. This will serve as your selling point.

Once you are into your first job, it will become easier to find your niche in the IT industry, however if a job isnt coming, it might be helpful to work towards your specialization now. This can be done by certifying yourself. There are so many different types of certifications to choose from, so make sure it is something which you will enjoy; while at the same time give yourself that competitive edge in the job market.

The purpose of certifications is to gain more experience in specialized areas of the IT world, giving each holder of the certifications targeted skills which are in high demand. A certification is a powerful tool, not only because it demonstrates your technical abilities, but also because it gives your employers confidence; letting job prospects know you have gone above and beyond to improve your skills in order to increase performance.

Employers want to hire employees who they can trust to take care of their business. They are placing a lot of responsibility on your shoulders, which means money to them. You have to be sure that you have the ability to perform when those tasks become yours. It takes practice and training to gain this type of confidence. If you find yourself in a position where you are a college grad, and still cant find work. The certification route might be something which you should give consideration in order to gain that training and confidence. The time it takes to earn a certification will prove to be well worth it once you have landed that job.

If you decide to become certified, commit yourself. It is a lot of hard work preparing for certification exams. Each exam is designed to test your abilities, so it is crucial to take your time and be sure you are well prepared before testing. There are many different companies which have products and services to help you prepare. You will find options for certification boot camps, computer based trainings, and distance learning programs available. Each is different and has its own benefits, but the end goal is the same, to give you the extra skills you need to perform better in the work place.
