As part of my BSc Computer Science degree, I’m writing a dissertation on computerized board games. Unfortunately, I can’t go into any further details, but I can tell you that, to learn the programming concepts and then to take those lessons through to the main ‘meat’ of the dissertation project, I’m going to be creating a basic version of the board game ‘WPFopoly’ – which is similar but unrelated to Monopoly. Windows Presentation Foundation, or WPF as it’s less tersely known, is the perfect choice of framework for creating a Windows-based board game. Unlike its predecessors – MFC and Windows Forms – WPF makes it easy to create applications that are very rich graphically. I worked at Microsoft for a year as an intern and, during that time, I only had limited contact with WPF (about 10 x 6 hour sessions, which may sound like a lot, but is barely enough to scratch the surface of a technology like this) back when the technology was known by the codename ‘Avalon’, and so will be starting basically from scratch. In this video, I present my thesis project for my Masters in Computer Science degree at the University of Tennessee. I have shot several videos about this project, but this one provides the best full overview (I also have a shorter overview video that is useful if you have less time). I discuss several topics about the application including the context of the research that it was built for, its motivation, the design and architecture used, its implementation, and a demo of the end product. I also have shot follow-up videos that provide more in-depth explanation about specific topics, such as a behind-the-scenes look at a client-server request that involves the Model, View, and Controller on both the client and server sides. Here is an abstract about the project: The image reconstruction work of Dr. Jens Gregor requires iteratively processing a set of images on a parallel computing cluster with different parameters until the desired reconstruction is achieved. This research had a need for a cross-platform application to handle selecting and cataloging these parameters as well as previewing the images and performing file preparations. A tool called ImageRecon was built to handle these tasks. ImageRecon is a database-backed web application utilizing the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern that features an intuitive graphical user interface.
