Skinner had some interesting ideas. no doubt humans are strongly shapped by their culture and environment. Heredity & genetics are very important however in shaping our behaviour.
Now the real question here is: is Operant Conditioning a result of conscious learning processes alone, or are there also unconscious learning processes involved?
There isn’t much choice in what you know…everything is taught to you from outside sources ever since you were conceived…so if you want to know if you really have free will then make a choice you don’t normally choose and see where that takes you. For instance when you get up to go to work when you arrive tell your boss to fuck off and rot in hell…then take note on what happens after and tell me if that was free will. Also note that you have a choice not to do that but why not do it?
@thetensious well we as the bird “play around”, that is, we live our lives and eventually we discover something. For the bird it’s the realization that pecking a colored disk brings it food, for humans it’s the realization that gambling can bring us money. People that gamble are some way or another introduced to the concept.
Think about it this way : if a person knew 20 people that gambled and lost all their money would they start gambling? i suppose not.. is that free will?
I don’t really understand how Skinner could refute free choice. Gambling for example. There was a point in time in a gamblers life that he/she was NOT a gambler and therefore had no conditioning to eliminate free choice. So to gamble for the first time under NO condition, was that not a “free choice”? Of course when you lock a bird in a cage with no food UNLESS he acts a certain way, it stops being free choice but gamblers aren’t locked in skinner boxes haha
I love psychology but damn…I could never treat animals like that, no bueno experimental psychology
@TheOtherView Chomsky is an idiot. His psych theories are about as good as his political views.
Read Chomsky’s critique of Skinner.
@Wintersverd It’s a stupid movie to you because you’re a lab rat. People with morals ask just what the relationship of the state and the individual should be. Was all that torture from the state needed? Is it any wonder the depraved strike back? Do you like “Gitmo”. It’s a cute word. And now we are all desensitized to it. So when you see it “downtown” it will seem normal. Thats what all this “reinforcement” leads..Skinner refuses to acknowledge He has a motive and agenda and he asserts his will
I cant believe ure making an academic observation on that stupid movie.
Think of the underlying law of nature.
Consider its astounding inferences and implications.
The single, underlying law … of nature! Not merely of physics, chemistry, psychology, biology, etc., but of all fields of inquiry known to humankind. The law we can all relate to, identify, understand and apply.
Ask yourself. What is the underlying law of nature?
Delight in the question. Have fun in the process of finding the answer firsthand for yourself.
Google it, as a start.
You spelled you’re wrong.
@veridia Social engineering and behaviorism also allows the government to manipulate the general public. Very sad.
@veridia My insults go to Skinnner the man. I know OC/sched of reinf’ work. Just watch Clock Work Orange. And that is my next concern. Personally, I find change without consciousness of the “mental links” more scary than just being a victim of myself. And those inducing change have their agenda. No one ever talks of that side of the equation. In conclusion radical Behaviorism may have had its finest day on 911/WTC. Because everyone, bright and dumb have been had with some bad video and lies.
No offense, but your a crackpot.
Behaviorism and these principles can allow victims to take control of their lives and reshape the social order in their peer network.
You’d be suprised how many people are rude and disrespectful out there. Simple emotions can be used as reinforcers and punishment. Dissaproval and gratitude are powerful in their respective ways.
Ah, social skills.
I use gratitude for positive reinforcement and dissaproval as a punisher all the time. This works great to create a positive social life with others.
I have to deal with a lot less annoying people now, and I model myself after actors like the Mentalist, Dog Whisperer, Captain Kirk… They use these techniques to maintain social order.
I never realized the purpose of gratitude as a reinforcer until recently.
I studied psych at TCNJ in the 90′s; we didnt have all these youtube videos available back then! Neat!
Instrumental conditioning
IExposeMormonism – You speak in hypothetical constructs… very far from what anyone would consider facts. Scientists, like Skinner, view things not as facts, but measurable stimuli in the environment. Even the “minds” that you claim he has warped exist in a physical form.
P.S. – You have a PSYCH degree. This does not in any way give you the authority to argue that a SCIENCE such as The Experimental Analysis of Behavior is farther away from TRUTH than Mormonism.
Schedules.. no agendas
that bird can read.
on the shoulder of giants thank you Dr.Skinner
This is what causes stock market crashes.
Very, very intersting.
People get more aggressive in their pursuit of money believing that they can influence the result.
Before Gregory Bateson and Double Bind was the Mormon Hierarchy. Not a Joke. And who ever is on the stimulus side always has an agenda. This is never spoken. Every time Skinner shot his little cannon over the fence He was the operator on his pigeon the neighbor. He had a purpose. He is the trespasser. Not to get too far ahead, but who ever did 911 fooled a lot of pigeons: We are fools. 911 was an inside job and a media job. This is what Behaviorism has done to our minds. Seriously.
what facts does Mormonism propose?
